Fairview Rural FD Hiring Drive/Operator



The Fairview Rural Fire Department will be accepting applications August 15, 2017 – September 11, 2017 to fill a full-time Driver/Operator (FS4) position working rotating 24-hour shifts (A, B, C).

PAY: $41,453.60 Annually (Per Wake County Fire Compensation Administrative Guidelines, dated

July 1, 2016 – $12.41 Hourly & Structural OT @ $18.62 Hourly) + Benefits

STATUS: 24-Hour Shift


The purpose of this position is to provide rapid fire suppression response to protect life and property by controlling and extinguishing fires including rescue, forcible entry, ventilation, and salvage work. Job responsibilities include the following: drive fire apparatus to fire and emergency scenes; pump water to fire at designated pressure and ensure that suction hoses and fire hoses are properly located; perform related mathematical calculations and functions; perform basic rescue functions in vehicle and machinery extrication; respond to medical emergencies; respond to after-effects of hazardous weather; act in absence of company officer on assigned shift; instruct other fire personnel in operation and care of fire equipment; inspect and maintain fire apparatus, equipment, and EMT supplies to include daily checks of engine, pumping and other equipment on apparatuses; recognize defects in the mechanical operation or condition of assigned equipment; performance of limited mechanical work involved in maintaining fire apparatuses, equipment, and tools; participate in pre-fire surveys and prepare scaled drawings; participate in in-service training, continuing education courses, and scheduled drills; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others requiring emergency assistance; provide training to the general public on fire prevention awareness; participate in special projects as assigned; maintain records and prepare reports; perform related tasks as required; clean and perform maintenance of fire station and grounds.

3. Must be at least 21 years old

4. Three (3) years of fire service experience

5. Firefighter Level I & II Certification (NFPA 1001) (IFSAC, ProBoard, DOD)

6. Emergency Vehicle Driver (NFPA 1002)

7. Driver/Operator-Pumps certification (NFPA1002) (IFSAC, ProBoard, DOD)

8. N.C. EMT

9. Hazardous Materials Responder – Level I (NFPA 472 and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120) (IFSAC, ProBoard, DOD)

10. NIMS 100, 200, 700, & 800 (meeting objectives of NFPA 1561)

11. Bloodborne Pathogens Training (meeting objectives of NFPA 1581 and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1003)

12. Current Hepatitis B vaccination

13. Must have a Class “B” Drivers License

Under administrative direction, the Deputy Fire Chief provides overall leadership and will direct, manage, supervise, and coordinate the activities and operations of the Fire Department including fire suppression, fire prevention, code enforcement, emergency medical services, and related services and activities; coordinates assigned activities with other divisions, departments, and outside agencies; and provides highly responsible administrative support to the Fire Chief.




Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university preferred. Major course work should be in fire science, fire administration, business or public administration, or a related field.




Fifteen years of broad and extensive experience in all major phases of professional fire fighting

including five years of administrative and supervisory experience at a supervisory level of

Battalion Chief and/or Fire Captain.


Required Certifications


Fire Officer II certification or above. (IFSAC)

Firefighter II Certification. (IFSAC)

Haz-Mat Operations

Emergency Vehicle Driver Certification.

Emergency Medical Technician

NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700 and 800
