2013 Legislative Day a Success

2013_Legis-Day_harkey_red-steps-600

RALEIGH – A dynamic two day Legislative event was hosted by the The North Carolina State Firemen’s Association this year.  On April 30, 2013 a BBQ was held for the members of the NC House and Senate and their senior staff members.  Over 200 people attended and enjoyed the finest BBQ the state has to offer, cooked by Harold Wagoner, Scott Hackler and Jason Hackler.  It was a great opportunity for fellowship in a relaxed atmosphere.  On May 1, 2013 firefighters from across the state converged on the legislature and engaged the members of the House and Senate in discussions on the major issues impacting the fire service in our state.  Our message was well received and important relationships were formed and renewed.  We look forward to another successful Legislative event in 2014!

On behalf of the NCSFA Board of Directors and staff, thank you to everyone who helped to make this event such a success.  And a huge thank you to the members of the Legislature that make the decisions and pass the policies that help firefighters in our state do their job to the best of their ability in the safest environment possible.

NCSFA Annual Legislative Day Success June 6, 2012

Raleigh – On June 6, 2012 a group of firefighters from all across North Carolina converged upon the NC Legislature for the North Carolina State Firemen’s Association’s Annual Legislative Day.

They visited house and senate members, as well as sat in on the vote for an important bill.  Having so many participants really makes a great impact and shows support for the issues that are so important to the fire service in North Carolina.

Thank you to all who attended.  We could not do this without you!

Stay tuned for more photos and updates on our legislative agenda.

DOT: Captain Bowen’s Name to go on Smoky Park Bridge

ASHEVILLE – The state Board of Transportation voted unanimously this morning to rename Smoky Park Bridge the Capt. Jeffrey Bowen Bridge in memory of the city firefighter who died in the line of duty last July.

“Throughout his career, Captain Jeffrey Scott Bowen brought honor to the City of Asheville and Buncombe County and had his life tragically cut short leaving behind family, friends and co-workers,” the board resolution reads.

The action was a turnaround from a previous vote from the board’s Road Naming Committee, which had decided March 7 not to move ahead with the request because of a tradition of not naming state roads or bridges for fallen firefighters.

After strong public criticism, the board reversed course Wednesday and voted unanimously to support the renaming.

“We have heard a strong outpouring of support for Capt. Bowen from the local community and want to be responsive to their concerns,” Board of Transportation Chairman Robert Collier said in a statement today.

Friend of Firefighters Award Presented

President Scott Alderman and Representative Dale R. Folwell

RALEIGH – The first ever Friend of Firefighters award was presented to Representative Dale R. Folwell of Forsyth County during the 2011 Legislative Day event held May 17th.

In 2009 Representative Folwell sponsored and worked diligently to pass House Bill 557. This bill, entitled “An Act to Enact the Future Volunteer Firefighters and Rescue Squad Members Act of North Carolina”, helped resolve issues surrounding the junior firefighter programs.

He has protected and defended many important issues related to funding for fire service programs. He has taken the time to become well educated on the programs and issues of the fire service and he has kept his door open and been accessible to our members.

We are proud and appreciative of the work done by Representative Folwell on our behalf. It is only fitting that he should be recognized for his efforts. Thank you Representative Folwell. We are indebted to you for your service.
